Picking the best Australian XI based purely on performances against India in encounters Down Under was not an easy task. The two teams have played 36 Tests over nine tours and there were several cricketers in contention for the eleven slots. A minimum qualification of five Tests was chosen in order to separate the contenders.

Hayden feasted on Indian bowling whether in India or at home. The strongly built left-hander packed a punch in his strokes and played both pace and spin with aplomb. Having created a reputation in India in 2001 for big
scores and masterly knocks Hayden continued where he had left off when in the 2003-04 series he scored 451 runs at an average of 64.42 with one century and three fifties.
In a contest studded with batting delights he provided some of the most vivid pyrotechnics - the highlight being his 234-run second-wicket partnership with Ricky Ponting at Melbourne which played a major role in
Australia’s nine-wicket victory.
Four years later his appetite for runs had only increased. He played in three of the four Tests and notched up hundreds in each of them finishing with 410 runs at an average of 82.
